Jett Sheng has been along for the ride the entire way, but the shifty 5-foot-9, 140-pound point guard feels that things are on the upswing. Sheng just helped the Eagles to a key victory over Horizon Christian on the road and he humbly gives credit to his teammates.
“I couldn’t have done it without (Eagles big men) Sasha (Agapiev) and Jonah (Zeller),” Sheng said. “They were so big inside and nobody could stop them. And they kept it going as I wasn’t having the best shooting from the free throw line but they kept it going and kept my energy up. I was in my own head but in overtime I had to do everything that I could.”
In overtime, Sheng scored nine of his 27 points, hitting 7-for-8 from the line in the period. Overall, despite some of the struggles he had from the free throw line – Sheng had been 4-for-10 in regulation – the junior had a solid overall game. He hit from long range (4-for-10), took it hard to the basket where he drew plenty of fouls, and took good care of the ball as late in the game he found teammates for some easy buckets in transition.
Overall, Sheng has been positive about this season despite some of the struggles the Eagles have had. “My season has been going pretty good,” Sheng said. “We had a couple of rough games in the past couple of tournaments but overall as an individual I feel like I’m playing good. “
During the summer, Sheng was very active on the high academic camp and combine circuit. As a result, a number of Division III college programs have been recruiting him, notably Lewis & Clark, Pacific University, and Occidental. He’s keeping all of his options open at his time, focusing on the rest of the year which he feels has turned around with their recent win.
“This was a big game especially for league,” Sheng said. “Right now we’re not looking too good in the rankings but as long as we keep it up in league, we’ve got a chance. And that’s what we’re going for this season, we’re trying to get to state and try and do something we haven’t done before.”
Sheng currently ranks as the #33 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
