The heady 5-foot-10, 160-pound point guard is getting it done on both ends of the floor, directing the Bowmen on offense efficiently, adding in his own scoring while also locking down on defense. Guerra has already earned his first college scholarship offer as a result and he’s aiming for more as he hopes to keep the winning going for Sherwood.
“I’m just trying to be as well-rounded as I can,” Guerra said. “Getting to the basket is one of the many things that I try to do to get my teammates involved. Just the drive and kick – right, left, wherever – I’m just getting to the bucket and making things happen for us.”
Guerra showed off his skills Wednesday night in a game against Century. He was literally unstoppable getting into the lane, finding open spaces to penetrate and then often using his physicality to get past defenders and either finishing over them at the cup or kicking it out to Sherwood’s open shooters. Guerra didn’t force the action either and sank a couple of threes on the perimeter when given the opportunity. On defense, he used his quick hands and anticipation skills to nab a few steals which led to more easy buckets.
Guerra was in full control of the game offensively and defensively and it’s these types of performances that have garnered him the attention of colleges. He noted that he’s been in constant contact with George Fox and is keeping all options open, but has also picked up his first scholarship offer from Multnomah.
“I’d love to play college basketball any time I can so I’ll take it,” Guerra said. “But I’m still looking at colleges and talking to them.”
As that happens, he hopes to continue Sherwood’s run through league play. From there, the Bowmen will head to the post-season and it’s one in which Guerra believes anything is possible. “We can go as far as we want to as long as we don’t beat ourselves,” Guerra said. “On any night we can beat any given team. I feel very confident in our abilities.”
Guerra currently ranks as the #23 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
