The talented 6-foot-4 point guard is doing his best to fill in for the pieces that have been missing so far this year and is hopeful that when those guys do get back, Newberg will have enough to make a post-season run in the Pacific League.
“Individually I think that things have been good, I’ve been hitting most of my goals trying to help the team out,” Chlumak said. “I know that I have to be more of a scorer than I’m used to, so I’m just trying to attack the hoop more. It’s just been tough with all of these guys out, we’ve had only about two or three games with our full roster and on top of that, most of the guys getting hurt are the only two or three guys that had varsity experience last year.”
“So it’s been pretty tough, but we’re getting experience with these young guys,” Chlumak said. “So we should get things turned around by the end of the season, I’ve got faith in them.”
Chlumak has certainly done his part. An example was on Tuesday in their home game against Forest Grove. The Vikings were missing leading scorer Alex Jaczko due to a sprained ankle and two other key players due to injury, so Chlumak had to step it up as a scorer (23 points) and rebounder (15 boards) in a performance that ended up being his first double-double of the season.
“I just do whatever the team needs me to do,” Chlumak said. “I know that I need to step up on the boards and I’ve been trying to do that this season because we’re kind of small and I’m one of the bigger guys on the team. I just need to do what the team needs me to do to win, but unfortunately that’s not been happening. But we’ll see how the end of the season goes.”
Going into the season, Chlumak had participated in a number of camps and combines in the fall to generate some early college interest. So far he’s heard the most from George Fox but has also received some correspondence from the likes of Grinnell and the University of Dallas. “Just small schools right now but hopefully during AAU season I’ll branch out a little bit more and get a little higher looks,” Chlumak said. “But I’m content with what I have.”
What Chlumak isn’t content with is the current trajectory of the season – one in which he feels changes now. “I just want success in the win category – that’s all I care about right now,” Chlumak said. “I know with that everything else will come like all the individual stuff. It’s a lofty goal but I can see us winning the next ten games once we get Alex back and all those guys. Even though we’re 0-2 (in league) right now I still want to get first place. That’s my main goal.”
Chlumak currently ranks as the #22 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
