The solid 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward has gotten into a good groove with the Lakers after transitioning over from football, and is already looking forward to a college basketball future at the Division III level. But first things first, there’s a senior season to play out and Fuson is concentrating on what’s immediately ahead with the team and what’s required of them to achieve their goals.
“We practice everyday with the mindset that we’ve got a target on our backs,” Fuson said. “We have each other – we’re a family – so we just keep going like that. Right about now, this is where we want to be. Our goal was to be number one in the state so I’m pretty pleased with where we are at right now but we’ve got a lot of work ahead with the rest of the season and playoffs.”
Fuson has contributed with his willingness to do the little things. This was clearly evident in the Lakers win over Grant in the finale of the MLK Holiday Invitational on Monday. The senior set screens, hit the boards, and played tough team defense as always. But he also stepped up offensively, hitting all five of his shots – including an open three – and also found teammates for scores with his passing.
“I feel like I’ve been playing really well, everywhere on the court helping and talking with everyone,” Fuson said. “I’ve been pleased with how I’ve been passing and shooting.”
On the backburner for Fuson is where he’ll be playing college basketball. His current list comprises of Division III programs Cal Lutheran, Redlands, Pacific, Whittier, and Pacific Lutheran. Fuson has visited the campuses of the California schools and is planning on visiting Pacific and Pacific Lutheran in the near future as he waits to hear back from the admissions offices.
“I’ve sent in all my applications with the schools I’m looking at amd I’m just waiting to hear back and see where I’m going from there,” Fuson said. “It’s going to be how much money I can get and financially what works for my family and I, what I like best and where I want to go for business-wise too for my career afterwards.”
But as we mentioned, there are still games left to play. While obviously the Lakers would love to make it to the state tournament after falling one game short last year, there is still work to do before the post-season begins. “League is going to be hard with Tigard, West Linn, and Oregon City playing them again,” Fuson said. “We’re excited for it and I think we can win league this year – that’s a goal of ours. I think we can be undefeated for the rest of league.”
Fuson currently ranks as the #68 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
