However, there has been some movement with the 2019 class with commitments in the last few weeks. We want to get you caught up on those as we bring you our recruiting roundup.
Leal Leading The 2020 Class
There isn’t a hotter name in the state in the 2020 class than that of Bloomington South (IN) guard Anthony Leal. The 6’5 shooter has been a big time target of national powers this year and while things are looking great so far, he’s still looking towards more.
In the last couple weeks, both Northwestern and Butler have made offers for Leal joining the likes of Xavier, Bradley, Evansville, Iowa, Toledo, Maryland, and Stanford. He’s a guy that will be a hot name during the summer based solely off the offer list so far but even more so, he’s proven he’s a player that people will want in a down class regionally.
With his play this year so far, it is conceivable that Leal will make the move into our top spot in the 2020 rankings when we being that process this week. He’s got a great case to make.
Jones Drawing Small School Offers A Year Early
The junior class is usually not one to pick up non-DI offers at this time of the calendar, mainly because those schools try and stay locked in on their senior targets. So, when East Noble (IN) guard Hayden Jones goes out and not only picks up a Saint Francis (IN) offer but also one from Grace College this week, that is kind of a big deal.
Right now, it is tough to tell if he will be at the NAIA level, which are what Grace and Saint Francis are, or if he will be beyond them but part of the idea with offering this early is because you want to get in on a kid you believe will be at the top of your list and likely out of your reach and so offering early will be a way of impressing them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t matter because they blow up a few levels above those offers but now is just a time to wait and watch.
In 11 games this season, Jones is averaging 10.6 points, 5.8 assists, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He’s a complete guard that has size and strength. If he is going to take off, he will need a step up in his offense as he’s only at 38% from the field with the majority of his shots coming from behind the arc. If he takes that step, there is a chance to surpass his offer list to date.
Robinson Making A Statement With Performance
One of the sleepers in the 2019 class, even though most of the top players are already committed, is Warren Central (IN) forward Jakobie Robinson. Sometimes, teams just want to wait on production rather than hope for it. That is kind of the case with Jakobie.
The 6’7 forward has been an intriguing name to keep in the back of your head but he’s missed time in July with an injury and until this high school season, he’s not been known for his production but rather his upside. So teams waited. And waited. And now, they need to step up.
Saint Francis (IN) pulled the trigger first as they offered two weeks ago but others will surely come as Warren Central is still undefeated in the last two seasons and one of the reasons for them keeping it going is Robinson. He’s been really tough around the rim and has the handles and aggressiveness now to produce points, rebounds, and steals game in and game out. He’s one of their best and most consistent players this year and with upside that still exists. Teams shouldn’t wait any more because it’s becoming too late.
Quick Hitters:
- 2021 PG Khristian Lander of Evansville Reitz (IN) has taken a visit to Louisville against Miami (FL) this past week. It’s one of a handful of visits he has taken to Louisville already but he has yet to pick up an offer from the ACC program. He currently holds offers from IUPUI, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State, Kansas, and Kansas State.
