A high-academic recruit with a 34 ACT score and excellent grades, Baird is currently drawing interests right now at the Division-III level. And while Baird’s academics may provide him a boost, it’s his all-around ability and mental savvy on the basketball court that makes him a truly intriguing recruit.
“He’s a high-character kid and an excellent student,” Holy Family head coach Pete Villecco said. “He’s a worker and he loves the game. He’s coachable. As far as a player, I think he’s a really good defender both on and off the ball. He can play either guard position and he has continued to improve both as a playmaker and a shooter. His mid-range game is tremendous and he gets to the rim, and I think he can for sure do that at the next level.”
Baird has visited Washington University in St. Louis, defending Division-III national champion Nebraska Wesleyan and Chicago University. He has also been in contact with Emory University in Atlanta. Villecco said that Baird has not made up his mind and it is not too late for other schools to join the mix.
The Tigers senior (6-3, 182) is averaging 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.2 steals per game through the first nine games of his senior season. He currently boasts a 42-percent field goal shooting clip, is shooting 60 percent from 3-point range over his past three games and is shooting 91 percent at the free-throw line. He has a 4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and has 20 pass deflections on the season.
Holy Family is the No. 3-ranked boys basketball team in Colorado. Baird, who plays for the Colorado Titans club, is Prep Hoops’ 45th-ranked senior in Colorado.
