Dec. 13 against Miami Springs: 37 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists.
Jan. 11 vs. Miami Sunset: 36 points, 7 rebounds, five 3-pointers.
And Dec. 8 against Gainesville’s The Rock: 32 points and MVP honors at the A-Rod Classic. Carter scored 32 of the Firebirds’ 46 points on the night.
The 6-foot-3 junior is a Florida native, who transferred from Cherry Creek High School in Colorado, has led Doral Academy to a perfect 16-0 start.
Carter, the son of Miami Heat assistant coach Anthony Carter, is an excellent finisher with a nice touch. He might surprise some with his quickness and leaping ability … and he defends.
“My strengths are helping the team win, leading the team, and, of course, playing at both ends,” Carter said Monday.
Carter plays for veteran coach Jorge Fernandez. So, yes, defense will be stressed. The defending Class 7A state champions have only allowed one opponent — Miami Jackson (57) on Dec. 11 — to score more than 52 points in any given game.
“We like to play by match-ups,” Carter said. “We rely on each other. We always have each other’s back.”
“That’s who we are,” Fernandez said of the scrappy defense. “That’s our staple. That’s how you win games.”
Fernandez had high praise for his newcomer, as well as returning senior guard Jonathan Nunez. The Firebirds lost almost their entire starting lineup from last season’s squad.
“The Carter kid has been phenomenal,” Fernandez said. “Nunez has been great … he’s my best defensive player.”
Carter has been offered a scholarship by FIU. He also has drawn interest from Kansas, Oregon, Iowa, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Northern Arizona, FSU, Miami and Hawaii.
How far Doral Academy makes it in 2019 will depend on the development of the Firebirds’ role players. Fernandez says he likes what he is seeing from senior Anthony Pellerano. Pellerano had 16 points and 9 rebounds in a 46-41 victory over Belen on Jan. 9.
“He’s been doing that for us,” Fernandez said. “He was in double figures every night up in Gainesville.”
The Firebirds’ quest to get back to Lakeland continues Wednesday vs. St. Brendan.
