Continue ReadingIn under two years, Darius Maddox has gone from being an obscure reserve on the St. John’s roster to one of the main scoring options on the team. Last week, after picking up All-Tournament Honors and winning the Rotary Roundball Classic in South Carolina, Maddox picked up an offer from Clemson and visited the campus unofficially.
“The visit was great. Everything in the campus is real close,” Maddox recalled. “The coach is real nice. He has real cool vibes. People that I didn’t expect to know me, like the weight trainers and the ladies in the cafeteria, everyone had good energy so it was a lot of fun.”
Clemson has kept in touch with Maddox since he burst onto the national recruiting scene at Peach Jam. After a strong run of play last summer with Team Durant, Maddox saw his recruitment trend up significantly. Schools love how well he shoots the ball and can score at high volumes with impressive efficiency, but they have also taken notice of the energy he gives off defensively.
“I’ve been stepping up on that end,” he said. “People think that because I can score that I’m lazy on defense.”
Maddox has recently demonstrated improvements in regards to getting downhill and creating for other teammates. He is getting rid of the ball quicker and reading the defense more clearly.
Along with Clemson, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Seton Hall and Kansas State are the other schools keeping in daily contact with Maddox. He hopes to plan more visits after the season. What are his current goals?
“Mainly to win WCAC, obviously, and for the team to grow and get better together,” he stated. “We’re making a lot of progress with our chemistry, we all like playing together, and its a lot of good vibes so its a lot of fun.”
Darius Maddox is currently ranked by Prep Hoops as a top-10 prospect in his class. To view the full ranking of Maryland and DC’s 2020 class, click here.
