The 5’10” Jones plays the game with high energy and a lot of passion, which is perfect in the Bulldogs’ system where full court pressure and up-tempo offense is a way of life. It has helped him attract collegiate interest from schools such as SEMO, Lipscomb, Louisiana-Monroe, SIUE, Citadel and Missouri State.
“It has always been my style,” Jones said. “Being where I’m from, you can’t step on the court and compete with no energy and zero toughness. Playing with older competition helped me get tougher and my energy comes from my love of the game.”
When it comes to playing defense, Jones has made it his calling card, whether it is playing the passing lanes is the Bulldogs’ zone press or just challenging an opposing ball handler and picking up from baseline to baseline.
“Defense wins championships and that’s what I’ve been taught growing up,” he said. “When I play defense, I don’t want anyone to feel comfortable. I want them to feel me.”
Jones’ high-motor intensity sets the tone for a team that enters the week with a 17-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in the Class 4 state polls. The Bulldogs have been dominating the competition all season with three tournament championships to their credit. However, there is one championship missing from that list, which is the state title and Jones and his teammates are gunning for it.
“My number one goal for my senior year is to win state,” Jones said. “We have gone to state two times in my high school career and we came up short, so I want to win a state title and prove the doubters wrong.”
Jones has put together a strong senior season as one of the Bulldogs’ five players that scores in double figures on a nightly basis. His defense has always been on point during his career, but he has steadily improved him perimeter shooting and playmaking skills along the way. He recently became the school’s career leader in assists in a victory over Dexter on Tuesday night.
