The emergence of Junior big man Zach Martin has helped to fill a gap that existed a year ago on this Cardinals team. The lack of a big man. After a solid AAU season with Kentucky Premier, the 6’8 Martin has become a solid role player for Taylor County on their way to a 15-4 start to the year and positioning themselves for a regional tournament run. Zach describes his game as, “Unselfish, team player that will give my team 100% on and off the court. I love to rebound, and fight inside the paint at both ends of the floor.” Zach definitely passes the eye test with his size and crazy athleticism.
The Junior defined his strengths as, “Athletic rebounder and strong interior defender. I can score in the post and make 80% of my free throws.” The big man also realizes there is plenty of room for him to improve as he develops his game, “I need to be able to turn around and score in the post consistently and improve my shooting and dribbling.” Currently a bench player averaging 3 points and 3 rebounds per game, Martin is shooting 70% from the field for the season and he has a goal for himself to get into the starting lineup soon. “My goal this season is to get a starting spot and help my team win any way possible.” When asked for his team’s goal this season, Zach voiced what any of his teammates would tell you, “Our goal is to win the 5th Region.” Taylor County is having a great season and will be a factor in the 5th region tournament next month. In order for the Cardinals to get back to Rupp Arena in March, Zach Martin will need to start becoming the beast that his size and athleticism shows he can be.
