The shifty 6-foot, 160-pound point guard from Skyview just got a taste of high-level competition during the holiday break at the Les Schwab Invitational and it’s helped the sophomore get ready for league play and a playoff run.
“It was great – a lot of people were out and we had to get used to it, the atmosphere was a lot different out here,” Johnson said. “We just tried to show that we belong. Vancouver usually gets looked over a lot so we wanted to show that there was talent up there too.”
Johnson certainly had himself a good tournament in Hillsboro. In helping Skyview capture the consolution title, he averaged 11.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists, shooting a robust .478 from three-point range. In the consolation title game against Grant, he hit six three pointers and his ability to hit the long range shot has him feeling good about his game this season.
“I’ve definitely become more confident,” Johnson said. “I know I need to get more aggressive this year and I’ve got to step into my role and help the team win.”
Johnson, the son of Skyview girls basketball coach Brett Johnson, played some AAU basketball with the Rose City Rebels last spring. It’s early for him when it comes to college recruiting but he’s got some goals and what it will take to get there. “I’m definitely trying to go D-I and I like the Pac-12,” Johnson said. “I know my leadership is really up there as well as my communcation and my shooting. I’m trying to get my defense up and be more helpful with that.”
With plenty of time to generate interest in the future, Johnson is now looking forward to league play which starts with Battle Ground tonight. “We knew those teams (at the LSI) were really good and it gives us a lot more confidence,” Johnson said. “We need to treat the teams back home just like we treated the teams there.”
