Continue ReadingAlthough Ronnie Hampton (2019) may not have been a household name coming into the season, the 5’10” guard has quickly turned into one of the most productive prospects in the Dayton area.
Hampton, a senior at Huber Heights Wayne, averages 15.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 3.1 steals through nine games. Simply put, he’s an improved player in a different role than last season.
“I was just a back-up last year, now I’m more of the main guy,” Hampton said. “I’m more of a leader. I define plays more, look to score, get more points … Basically have to keep everybody together.”
Knowing that Wayne was graduating almost all of their starters from a year ago, his preseason preparation reflected an expanded role.
“It made me have to work harder,” he said. “So far this year, I’ve been watching more film. But, also, I was watching games of film from last year to see what I had to improve.”
“One thing I could continue to improve is my jump shot. I’ve been on the gun a lot more lately.”
Outside shooting is the main hole in Hampton’s game right now. Nonetheless, he hasn’t had issues scoring against quality opponents this year — 23 points versus Fairmont, 21 versus Trotwood, 19 against Sidney, and 15 against both Upper Arlington and Centerville.
He’s a power player from the perimeter who uses his handle and strong frame to get to the rim. Hampton is a skilled ball-handler in tight spaces. Able to finish through contact. We could see him being a spark plug scorer at the next level, if he’s given the chance. Right now, he’s awaiting college interest.
“At one point I was talking to Kentucky State, but I don’t know what happened,” Hampton said. “This was during, like, preseason basketball.”
We’d think that Hampton will catch, at least, local college attention in Southwest Ohio if his play maintains throughout the season. They play at Northmont tonight at 7:30 before going on the road to Olentangy Liberty tomorrow.
Wayne is 5-4 currently but has played one of the hardest schedules in Ohio. They’ve posted impressive wins against Upper Arlington, Centerville, and Trotwood-Madison.
“I feel that the season has been going pretty well,” he explained. “We’ve had our ups and downs. But, for now on, I feel that we’re learning to come closer together. So, I feel as a team, we’re growing and that’s great for the rest of the season.”
