Kobe Withers is one of the juniors helping lead the charge and the all-around 5-foot-10, 160-pound combo guard continues to work hard to improve. On Thursday night, Withers poured in a team-high 25 points for Sprague in an important victory over McNary that may get the Olympians on track in the Mountain Valley League.
“It was a big win for us,” Withers said. “We had three losses (in league) before this and this is a big turnaround point. I think we’re going to continue getting wins off of this.”
In scoring his 25 points, Withers showed off versatility in his offensive game. He hit a couple of three-point shots, but also created off the dribble, hitting from mid-range as well as at the basket. Defensively he was very active in Sprague’s zone defense, and parlayed playing the passing lanes into a number of steals that led to layups.
“I’m getting better as the season goes,” Withers said. “I’ve been working on my game all-around and I’ve just got to keep getting better.”
Withers plays his AAU basketball with Hoop Salem and was on the 16U squad last season. He’s aiming to play college basketball and is hopeful that this season as well as the subsequent spring and summer will draw attention to his game. “I’m hoping to get some interest soon,” Withers said. “I just want the right fit, something that fits my needs academically as well as with basketball. Wherever I can get into hopefully – I’m pushing to go maybe low-end D-I or D-II. Wherever I can get, I’ve just to keep working hard.”
A good run through the Mountain Valley League and into the post-season will only help matters. Withers has a good feeling about the future. “We’re getting better every day in practice and we’re going to keep getting better,” Withers said. “We just want to finish off strong.”
Withers currently ranks as the #34 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
