The athletic 6-foot-2, 175-pound combo guard has previously played a supporting role but he’s a senior now at Westview which means he’ll need to take on a leadership role this year. Newton is up for the task, and while the start of the season was delayed due to a hand injury, he’s shed the cast and is set on taking the young Wildcats through conference play.
“We’re still developing but we’ve got a young core,” Newton said. “The confidence will rise as we continue on the season. But I think we’ll surprise some people. Individually, it feels to just get back out there and get back into the flow of things. As a senior, you want to play as much as you can.”
Newton is an athletic performer who is undoubtedly Westview’s top offensive threat, largely because of his ability to create his own shot. Given that he’s one of the few upperclassmen on the team, head coach Michael Wolf is expecting Newton to do a lot – and he knows it. “I’m just working on being smarter with the ball,” Newton said. “And taking advantage of the opportunities I get on the court.”
Newton played with Rose City Basketball during the summer AAU season and was able to catch the attention of some college programs. He noted that he’s hearing mostly from NWAC schools right now, in particular Highline College. While he has enjoyed the process he’s keeping things open.
“Right now I’m just trying to focus on my senior season,” Newton said. “I’ll see what my looks are after and start figuring out where I want to play. It’s all up in the air for me, I’m open to all opportunities.”
Westview has had its ups and downs so far this season but as the meat of conference play comes, Newton is confident. “I’ll think we’ll be just fine in the Metro League,” Newton said. “We play hard and play tough, and that’s Metro League – it’s hard, tough basketball. I think we’re going to fare very well and we’ll wake some people up.”
Newton currently ranks as the #62 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
