The 2022 prospect has come a long way since that day as he went down in the records book as the youngest player to suit up for the program.
As of Jan. 18, Amat III had made 51 3-pointers on the season. Doing that in 17 games as a freshman who is typically a pass-first guard is awfully impressive. Amat III also had no turnovers against Miami Christian and Schoolhouse Prep.
“The most growth I’ve seen this season has been being able to shoot the 3 from beyond range consistently and also being able to handle pressure against older, stronger and faster guards,” Amat III told Prep Hoops.
No offers or interest have come yet for the freshman, but even at his 5’7″, 125-pound frame, Amat III is carving out a name for himself rather quickly.
Last summer, he suited up for Team Swoop.
“Playing for Team Swoop helped me by playing against the top teams and other guards in the country,” Amat III said. “Also, to see how basketball is played in other parts of the country.”
Amat III tells us that he probably won’t participate in AAU ball in the summer ahead.
“I will likely take a year off to work on getting stronger, faster, jump higher, ball handling and shooting so I can be at the next level the year after,” he said.
Playing under his father Jose Amat II has certainly helped Amat III learn in a comfortable environment for the past few years.
In Class 2A-District 8, Westwood Christian sits behind Miami Christian and Schoolhouse Prep for the district lead. Amat III has shown he can hang in one-on-one basketball and his basketball IQ is through the roof. As long as he adds muscle and furthers his overall game, he’ll be on the fast track for success.
