Wingard knocked down a season high four triples on his way to scoring 15 points. He’s been putting a lot of work on improving that part of his game, and his confidence is growing right before our eyes.
“This game, I was just hitting them back to back,” said Wingard after the win. “That’s how I was getting confidence. I kept hitting them.”
Wingard says his current area of focus is pulling up from mid-range off one or two dribbles. With his back court mates battling foul trouble, much of the ball-handling duties lied on Wingard throughout the game. He did a good job handling it under pressure, which he says is an underrated attribute he possesses.
“I played for DC Premier where I was coached by Coach Garner, and now he’s at Gwynn Park,” said Wingard of his relationship with his new high school coach. “ We’re pretty close. We go to the same church. He’s a good coach. He came in, welcomed the guys. We’ve got back to back wins and are feeling good now.”
When Wingard plays to his full potential and can knock down shots, Gwynn Park becomes much more dangerous. His teammate Jalen Hayes is one of the top scorers in the DMV, and with Wingard emerging at the right time they could become a dangerous team to face in the postseason.
