Prospect Spotlight: Jayce Goergen (2019)
Ankeny Christian Academy has raced out to a 9-0 start this season, and it’s been senior point guard Jayce Goergen leading the charge.
The 5-foot-10 floor general says his primary role is to make sure things are meshing well for the Eagles’ offense. And is just so happened, he’s posting some some strong numbers while doing so.
“I feel like I’m pretty good at leading the team. Being the point guard , I really have to survey the floor make sure we get the plays going and just find the open guy, and just make sure the plays happen,” said Goergen.
“I feel like my ball-handling is probably my strongest asset, that’s what really gets me open and allows me to drive and find my teammates. I need to improve on getting more rebounds and getting my vertical higher.”
Goergen was good last year as a junior, but has really stepped his game up quite a bit this season, “We had to pick up a lot of slack last year, because Drew Wilken averaged 17 points per game last year,” said Goergen.
They’ve done a nice job of picking up that slack, especially Goergen, who is averaging team-bests 16.6 points, 4.6 assists and 4.1 steals per game.
The team goals moving forward for Goergen and Co. are to win conference and to finish the regular season undefeated. Ultimately, making the state tournament for the first time since 2013 is the biggest goal.
When his senior season is complete, college basketball will become a focus for Goergen. He’s got two schools right now that are hot on his trail.
“I definitely would like to play college basketball, and I’ve been talking to a couple schools; Faith Baptist College here in Ankeny and also Northwestern from St Paul, they’re also an option, too.”
