Prospect Spotlight: Jake Beckmann (2020)
A top point guard in Iowa’s 2020 class, Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Jake Beckmann is flying under the radar a bit right now, and could see his recruitment swell in the next several months.
The 5-foot-11 junior has been a point guard for most of his hoops career, and has been playing some off guard this season for the Saints. He’s both an adept shooter and ball-handler.
“Shooting is probably one of my best strengths, and I’ve been working a lot of my-handling and driving by people and more of my attacking game,” said Beckmann, who mentioned what he’s working to improve.
“I think it’s a lot of lifting for me, I’m on the smaller side, so I need to get into the weight-room.”
Beckmann is averaging 11.3 points per game for the 6-7 Saints. He says although the record is not up to Xavier’s standards, they should see steady improvement down the final stretch.
“We started off a little sluggish, we just had to figure out our game and how we play together. But I think the last few games, we’ve figured it out,” he said. “I think it’ll be a good rest of the season.”
When his junior season is complete, Beckmann will play with one of the state’s better 17U teams, Team Iowa. It’s then when he could see the currently slow recruitment start to pick up.
“AAU-wise I just want to show out and get some good tournament wins for the team and see if we can get Team Iowa exposed more,” said Beckmann.
“Hopefully in the next few months (recruitment) starts taking off, I just started getting into it this season, but I haven’t really been talked to by any colleges yet, I’m just waiting.”
