Prospect Spotlight: Hunter Rickels (2019)
Calamus-Wheatland is off to an 11-2 start this season, and it’s 5-foot-10 point guard Hunter Rickels that’s been leading the charge.
The senior floor general is averaging team-bests 17.7 points and 7.8 assists per game. Defensively, he’s swiping a team-best 3.8 steals per game.
“I’d say my leadership and helping not only younger guys but older guys get their points is what I do best. I like to drive the lane and dish it off to my big-man or guys that can hit it out on the 3-point line,” said Rickels.
“My role this year is to be more of a playmaker, either scoring or dishing it off and just making sure the offense is running smoothly.”
The 11-2 start for the Warriors is one of the best starts they’ve ever had. Rickels says one big goal is to finish the season out with the best record in school history.
“We want to finish with the best regular season record in school history.” Rickels said. “Individually, I’d say I’m trying to get 150 assists and get 1,000 career points. But I’m more focused on the team-based goals, trying to get to district finals and substate.”
Also a cross-country and track standout, Rickels ran in the state meet this season. He says both college basketball and college track and field are options for him right now.
“I do like basketball more than cross country and track, but I do have pretty good times for running, so both options are available, but I would much rather play basketball in college,” said Rickels.
Division III, Division II and NAIA programs have been reaching out for for basketball. He’s got some D2 looks for running. Oskaloosa NAIA Williams Penn has offered for both track and basketball.
“I don’t know when I’ll decide,” said Rickels. “But my options are still open right now.”
