Thankfully it’s just a sprain, but the recent absence of Sunset’s top scoring threat meant that others would need to step up and Colby King has taken on that challenge. The strong 6-foot-4, 195-pound wing has really picked up his play with his offense and work on the boards and it’s helped the Apollos get off to a good start in Metro League play.
“We’re playing really well as a team right now,” King said. “After that Camas game we were motivated to string some wins together and we had to step up once Braeden went out. It’s been a collective effort – everyone’s doing a little bit extra to chip in for it.”
King has certainly done his part. In Friday’s exciting 52-49 win over Beaverton on the road, the junior showed great toughness. He hit perimeter shots, took it strong to the hole, and was a force on the boards. It was his gritty defensive rebound on Sunset’s last defensive stand and his resulting free throw that provided the final margin of the game. It’s King’s hard-working attitude that has him going at this stage of the year.
“I feel like I started off the season well but then I leveled off a little,” King said. “But once Braeden went down I really had to step up for the team. I’ve been getting in the gym more often before school and after school, getting ready for moments like this and I was confident. I’m shooting the three ball really well and being able to shoot the three really opens up my driving to the rim and getting to the line and making plays for teammates.”
While winning certainly is at the top of his list, King does have some other individual goals this year. Having eschewed AAU basketball last summer, the hope is that coaches are taking notice of his game. “I really want to play in college,” King said. “I would go anywhere that would take me. I just want to play past my high school career. I didn’t play club ball last year and spent the time focusing on myself and this season but I definitely want to play it this year and Because I want to get some offers.”
More big-time performances like the one he had against Beaverton will certainly help. He’ll get another big opportunity coming up very soon. “Next game we play Jesuit at home which is one that everyone circles on the calendar, and me personally I’ve never beaten Jesuit in two years so I’m looking forward to it,” King said. “But we just want to take it game by game and we’re 2-0 in Metro, that’s all that matters. I just want to keep pushing myself to be the best that I can be as there are still things I can take to another level with my play.”
