In the Warriors’ season opener against Niwot on Nov. 28, Elize scored a game-high 21 points while making nine of his 16 total shot attempts. The sophomore was 3 for 6 from 3-point range and turned the ball over just once.
Obviously, it was a good start.
Now nine games into the 2018-19 campaign, Elize is averaging 11.2 points, 1.8 assists, 3.1 rebounds. Clearly fulfilling his role on a balanced Frederick (6-4) team, Elize has already impressed head coach Enoch Miller with the potential he has flashed early in his prep career.
“He’s very good at 1-on-1 and attacking the rim,” Miller said. “He’s a good finisher. He’s already very athletic and we think he’s going to grow a couple more inches. Izayah is a very skilled player who can shoot and pass the ball, and he sees the floor really well. He’s got a ton of potential.”
Already a 6-foot-1 sophomore, Elize has great length and is a fluid athlete for his size and age. He uses that length effectively both on offense and on defense, where he averages nearly a steal per game. Much of Elize’s offense, in fact, comes from his ability to tip passes, force turnovers and use his speed and finishing ability to score in transition.
Elize spent the past club season playing with the Colorado RoughRiders and turned plenty of heads while doing so. This season with Frederick, he is solidifying himself as one of the top up-and-coming players in the state.
If he can continue to improve and maximize the potential he has shown already in his young prep and club basketball career, Elize will be a prospect to keep an eye on moving forward.
