Miller is relying on Richard’s range and accuracy to be a primary factor in what has turned out to be a resurgent season for the Warriors (6-4), who went 1-22 last winter but lost seven games by six points or fewer including three overtime losses. Without Richard making 35 percent (38 for 108) of his 3-point shots as a sophomore last season, many of those close losses wouldn’t have been close at all.
It’s easy to understand Miller’s faith in Richard. But as Richard, who currently stands at 5-foot-10, continues to grow into his body, could his shooting ability carry him to the next level?
Miller thinks Richard has a shot.
“Davis is the best shooter on our team,” Miller said. “He has deep, deep range, and a quick release. He’s got good size on him for a guard. He has also improved on his rebounding and he’s not afraid to mix it up. He can make a lot of tough shots, but he still works hard to get high-percentage looks.”
Richard leads the Warriors in 3-point shooting, making 21 of his 57 attempts from behind the arc for a 37-percent average so far in 2018-19. On a team full of high-energy players and athletic football crossovers, he is also averaging 3.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.2 steals each time out.
Developing into a fringy prospect, Richard could be a shooting guard to keep an eye on moving forward.
