The 8 team tournament features several area schools as well as visitors from Southeast Missouri and Illinois. Here is our run-down of the field, schedule of games, and players to watch.
The Field:
1 Seed: Jackson (11-2)
Jackson enters the tournament as the well-earned top seed. They are battle tested, deep, and will certainly be the biggest team in the field with several players 6’5 or taller. They seem to find their way in the finals of this tournament annually and are more than capable of bringing home the hardware this year.
2 Seed: McCluer (7-4)
Speaking of battle tested, McCluer was off to an impressive 7-1 start before dropping 3 straight at the Legends of Winter Classic against some stiff competition. They are well-coached, athletic, and have an excellent 1-2 scoring punch that makes them a serious threat for a championship run
3 Seed: Lindbergh (8-4)
Imagine where this team could be right now with their 6’11 standout Erik Lahm? His return from injury is indefinite and could be a game changer for a Flyer team who has home-court advantage and is playing good basketball behind some solid senior leadership.
4 Seed: Westminster Christian (7-4)
The Wildcats are an intriguing bunch led by a talented duo in their backcourt that carries the scoring load for them. Several of their wins have come by way of blowout and all four of their losses this season have been by fewer than 6 points.
5 Seed: St. John Vianney (3-9)
St. John Vianney comes in with a less than stellar record but they have faced a very tough schedule so far this season and should not be overlooked . After a rough first quarter, they went blow for blow in a recent loss to Lindbergh without the services of their leading scorer who should be ready to go now.
6 Seed: Triad (8-8)
Triad comes across the river from Illinois as a very streaky team. They have a pair of 3 game winning streaks as well as a pair of 3 game losing streaks, so you never know what you’re going to get. If leading scorer Luke Cox is on top of his game, they could cause the hosts trouble in the opening round.
7 Seed: Confluence (2-9)
After a magical run last season, Confluence has struggled out of the gate with a new and young group this season. They have an excellent inside presence in senior Tavon Graham and have been showing signs of improvement in recent games. They are expecting two key contributors to return soon, which could drastically change the dynamic of their team.
8 Seed: Bishop DuBourg (4-11)
Having to square off against the top seed in any tournament is always less than ideal, and Jackson will be a tall order (pun intended) for DuBourg. However, although they are a young team the Cavs do have 3 rotation players over 6’5 that may be able to negate the size advantage that Jackson typically has over their opponents.
