1. MVP
Evan Taylor (Glenbard West 2019, G, 6-foot-6) – 19 points (8-17/0-0/3-4); 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block
Glenbard West’s Evan TaylorTaylor was efficient for three quarters and, fortunately for him and his team, an abysmal 1-for-6 first quarter didn’t cost them. Taylor’s length was key at getting to the rim, shooting over defenders, protecting the rim in a 2-3 zone and playing in the middle of a 2-1-2 fullcourt press. It was obvious that he creates so much for his team.
In the second half he was 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the free throw line. He was strong as a rebounder to collect defensive rebounds.
2. Play of the game
In the first quarter, Glenbard East’s Antonio Davis (2019) blocked and rebounded Evan Taylor’s shot and then ran down the court and got a paint touch, hitting a hook shot.
3. Best offensive performance
DaRon Hall (Glenbard East 2020, G, 5-foot-11) – 15 points (7-13/1-4/0-0)
Hall was a change-of-pace guard that worked off the ball to get his points. He scored 14 of his 15 points in the second half working off the ball to find openings in West’s 2-3 zone.
4. Best defensive performance
Antonio Davis (Glenbard East 2019, F, 6-foot-6) – 14 rebounds (eight defensive), 3 blocks
Davis was a force in the paint, securing possessions for the Rams. He also blocked shots, which helped keep West’s paint touches to a minimum.
5. Best guy off the bench
Matthew Gertzen (Glenbard West 2019, F, 6-foot-2) – 6 points (3-5/0-2/0-0), 1 steal, 1 rebound
Gertzen was slow to get involved offensively but he provided solid minutes for the Hilltoppers with his hustle and energy on both ends of the court. He hit the only two shots he took in the fourth quarter.
6. Best intangibles
Alijah Nelson (Glenbard East 2020, G, 6-foot) – 10 points (4-17/2-10/0-0), 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
Nelson’s most impressive move offensively was his crossover to get himself free to the basket. He showed quick hands to get a steal and good court awareness to dissect the 2-3 zone but, perhaps, didn’t look to pass enough after beating his man to the basket.
7. Best under-the-radar performance
Griffin Foster (Glenbard West 2019, G, 6-foot-3) – 10 points (4-7/2-5/0-0)
Foster missed his first two 3-point attempts in the first quarter but connected on four of his last five shots from the floor, including 2-for-3 from deep. His consistent scoring was key, chipping in a bucket when his team needed one, including two big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
8. Best underclassman
Braden Huff (Glenbard West 2022, F, 6-5) – 10 points (4-10/0-1/2-3); 8 rebounds
Huff has good mobility and shoed his comfort in playing on the perimeter, at times. He was solid on the block and on the offensive glass. He has a good base skillset bet needs to get quicker and develop a perimeter game to fully utilize his frame.
9. Best coaching decision
Tim Hoder (Glenbard West)
Opening the game in man-to-man, Hoder switched his defense to a 2-3 zone, and then flashed a 1-3-1 zone at times. Glenbard East couldn’t shoot over the zone, going 4-for-20 from 3-point range, and it negated Deon Cook and Alijah Nelson getting to the rim.
10. Best shot creator
Deon Cook (Glenbard East 2020, G, 5-foot-11) – 14 points (6-16/0-0/2-3); 3 assists
Cook created for himself early in the game. His quick first step allowed him to get by most West defenders. Following a 1-for-5 second quarter, Cook came out in the second half creating for his teammates with all three assists in the second half. Developing a 3-point show will allow him to become a versatile scorer.
