Player of the Week: Week 8
Our Week 7 poll set a new record for total votes and votes for the winner as Fairdale’s Stephen Moore took home the title with a ridiculous 65,000 votes. Here are this week’s nominees for Player of the Week:
- Franklin-Simpson’s Demarco Chatman – The Junior point guard for the Wildcats had 22 points and 7 rebounds in a win over Greenwood then followed that up with 23 points and 11 rebounds in a district win over Logan County. He ended the week with 18 points and 6 rebounds with a buzzer beater 3 to send the game to Overtime against Barren County before eventually falling in double OT.
- Ballard’s Walter Johnson Jr. – The Senior combo guard had 25 points and 8 rebounds in a win over Doss, 16 points in a win over PRP and 16 points and 5 steals in a loss to Seneca at the LIT. Walter was named to the All-Tournament team at the LIT and was offered by IU-Southeast and Freed-Hardeman.
- Boyle County’s Reese Smith – Fresh off a broken hand that caused the Junior to miss the first half of the season, Reese scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in a loss to Collins before having a monster game against Garrard County Friday night where he scored 19, grabbed 9 rebounds, got 8 steals, dished out 5 assists and had 2 blocks in a big district win.
- Newport’s Tahj Harding – The Wildcats went 4-0 in the 9th region All A tournament and are headed to Richmond. Harding had 22 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and the game winning free throw against Beechwood. The next game Harding had 15 points and 9 rebounds in limited action of their win over Bellevue. Against Newport Central Catholic, Tahj scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Championship game saw Harding score 10 points and grab 10 rebounds for a double double. His big week led Newport to their first All A Championship since 2010.
- John Hardin’s Jachai Walker – Walker started the 2A State Tournament with 8 points and 4 rebounds before 20 points and 4 rebounds on a perfect 8-8 shooting against Glasgow and added 2 assists and 2 steals. The state title game saw Walker go for 17 points and make the All Tournament team as John Hardin won the inaugural 2A State Tournament.
- George Rogers Clark’s Brennan Canada – The 6’7 Senior scored 25 points and grabbed 19 rebounds on Tuesday night in a win over Bourbon County then followed that up with 25 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Johnson Central at the Tim Short Classic.
- Corbin’s Chase Sanders – The Senior had a huge week as he had 20 points and 4 rebounds against Pineville then 25 points and 6 rebounds against Cordia then finished the Hometown Bank Classic with 37 points and 10 rebounds against Athens Prep from Tennessee. All three games were wins for the Hounds.
