We’re in the dog days of January. Teams are rounding into their true forms while grinding through the thick of conference and region play. The top teams have seemingly separated from the packs though there are certainly challengers lurking. This will be a big week in that regard.
Grand Forks Red River at West Fargo Sheyenne – Friday, Jan. 18
The Roughriders have won five out of their last six games and get a rematch with the Mustangs from the early season. Sheyenne beat Red River 69-63 at the beginning of December and currently sits atop the EDC after Fargo Davies’ loss to West Fargo last week. The Roughriders look like the fourth best team in the league though there appears to be a gap between the top three and the rest of the field. A win here could change that appearance.
West Fargo at Moorhead – Friday, Jan. 18
The Packers get a break from EDC play to head over to Moorhead and face the Spuds for what should be a fun matchup of frontcourt talent in the Fargo/Moorhead area. Moorhead looks like a potential state-tournament contender out of Section 8AAAA with senior swingman Maleeck Harden while West Fargo is riding high led by a dominant frontcourt duo of Luke Lennon and Hunter Lyman.
Jamestown at Minot – Saturday, Jan. 19
The Blue Jays dominated Bismarck Century last weekend, securing a top ranking in Class A. Jamestown has beaten every viable contender in the WDA to this point. The one exception is Minot, which the Blue Jays get a shot at Saturday. The Magicians are 7-2 on the year and in third in the WDA, boasting on the state’s most potent offenses. This one could be a shootout as it features two of the best juniors in the state in Boden Skunberg (Jamestown) and Jaxon Gunville (Minot).
