Newcomers are either players previously undervalued or possibly players that developed their game in the last few months. For most of the newcomers we ranked it simply comes down to exposure. They didn’t advance as far in the playoffs as other players or their AAU team was playing on a forgettable circuit.
For whatever reason these players escaped the @PrepHoopsTN gaze until now. Read about why they earned their way into the latest 2020 rankings.
These players represent five newly ranked Class of 2020 hoopers (ranking listed left of their name).
#47 C.J. Wilson (Collierville)
Fighting for Collierville, C.J. musters points the playground way…off the dribble. Standing 6-foot-1, Wilson releases shots quickly almost exclusively inside the arc. Wilson is a step slower than the elite Memphis-area guards though he can move better than average. This creates necessary space to get his shot up on the rim.
#48 Nate Spivey (Dyersburg)
Spivey is a muscular combo guard. He probably doesn’t have the change of direction to be an elite college point guard, but he could be a secondary playmaker or a small college. Top 50 is pretty high for Spivey. He is not that jump out of the gym wing or the passing wizard you want at the 1 or the 3. He can score in bunches and that is a valuable skill. Spivey’s ceiling feels like Division II. That is an early guess. His 17u season will be intriguing.
#60 Kamarie Coffey (West Creek)
Coffey has the height and athleticism to be a Division I prospect, but he has turn potential into production very soon. The 2020’s are entering their final AAU season and Coffey is generally only known within his area code right now. He easily made the Top 20 at our @PrepHoopsTN Fall Combine with solid mid-range game. Coffey starts for West Creek alongside two very skilled guards (Jaylen Negron, Touch is important. Coffey checks that box. He needs to improve his motor and keep that handle improving. He projects as a LM SG/SF at the high end. That lofty scenario is months of the hardest work of his life away though.
