In the state of Michigan, we are lucky to have a hard working and dedicated class of 2019. There are additional players that due to their performance so far this season and their skill sets, deserve a look for the Mr. Basketball award.
Caleb Bates (6’7″, F, Lake Shore High School)
Bates is an old fashioned gutty player that Mr. Basketball voters would love. He’s tough as nails and comes out to play every game. Bates can always be counted on to score and rebound at a high level. He is a walking double-double. Bates is versatile as well, having the ability to score from the perimeter or the paint.
Caleb Hodgson (6’10, C, Dansville)
The original 5 covered were dominated by perimeter play. Hodgson might be the best post player in Michigan. While he can bang in the paint and get rebounds, what makes him special is his ability to step out to the perimeter and handle the ball or shoot. Hodgson has to be guarded all the way to the arc.
Dylan Jergens (5’11”, PG, Howardsville Christian)
Jergens has been dominant this season, putting up multiple 50 point games. He has no limits on his range and is the best pure shooter in the state. Jergens is chasing Michigan’s all time scoring record. He’s becoming a small school legend and is proving that elite talent can come from anywhere.
Jalen Thomas (6’10”, C, UD Jesuit)
Thomas is another dominant big man in Michigan. He may be the best rim protector in the state. Thomas has been a force in the paint so far this season for UD Jesuit. On a star studded team, his skill set still stands out. Thomas’ game is uniquely different than most of the top seniors.
Chandler Turner (6’6″, SG, Detroit Renaissance)
Turner is an elite talent in Michigan. He’s athletic in the open floor where he can lead the break or fill in on the wing. Turner can shoot from behind the arc and opens the floor for his teammates. Turner is taking his talents to Bowling Green State University next season.
