It was a tight one throughout the first three quarters. In fact it looked like there could very well be an upset in the works as Hononegah led 41-38 heading into the fourth. Rockford East picked up the intensity on the defensive end and got out in transition. It was over at that point. They pushed the lead up to 10 points mid-way through the final quarter and won by a final of 66-58. Here are our Most Intriguing Prospects: Rockford East vs Hononegah.
SG Chris Burnell (Rockford East – 2019)
It was a bit of a slow start for one of the better unsigned wings on the board. Burnell is a powerful two guard with a bowling ball type frame where defenders just bounce off him. Played both on and off the ball at various parts of the game, but is more comfortable naturally off the ball as a scorer. Did have a couple nice assists including a pick/roll find. As a scorer he didn’t hit any of his shots from deep. Very streaky shooter that didn’t have it working on Friday night. Drilled a mid-range pull up and a few runners. Most effective scoring from 15-feet and in where he is powerful slashing to the rim and can finish with either hand. Burnell had 17 points.
SF Sha’den Clanton (Rockford East – 2019)
Clanton got things rolling early in the game for Rockford East. The 6’4” small forward is a long and angular wing that covers a lot of ground with his length and long strides. Quick twitched athlete who is most efficient working from the mid-range and in. Hit a 15-foot jumper and scored on several quick moves inside. Also got out in transition for several explosive plays. Did connect on a three at the end of the game. Clanton has defensive versatility being able to switch and guard multiple spots. Went for 13 points.
SG Sincere Parker (Rockford East – 2020)
Parker might be the most projectable prospect on this team. He broke out over the summer helping his team knock off the NY Rens while he was playing up an age level. He managed 11 points in this game, but overall was kind of quiet in the way he did it. Like his length and ability to fill out his 6’3” frame. Usually a quality perimeter shooter it wasn’t falling on this night for the most part beyond one from the top of the key. Used his long strides and athleticism to slash. Plays above the rim with a tip slam along with catching a monster alley-oop. Parker had 11 points.
SG Andres Thompson (Rockford East – 2019)
Thompson stands at about 6’2” and this combo guard is super bouncy. Excellent rebounder with the ability to get on the offensive glass. Pesky defender who had 10 points.
PG Damarion Dickens (Rockford East – 2019)
Dickens is a tiny 5’8” point guard who was most effective in this game as a catch and shoot threat from deep. Drilled a few of them on his way to 12 points.
F Nick Pierson (Hononegah – 2019)
Pierson was the best player for Hononegah in their game against Rockford East. The 6’4” combo forward has a bigger build and isn’t the most athletic, but he gets stuff done! Crafty driver who won off the bounce several times on straight line drives from the wing. Can score in the post some and is a quality area rebounder who scored on second chance opportunities. Pierson went for 17 points.
PG Trent DeVries (Hononegah – 2021)
DeVries opened our eyes in this game. The 6’1” point guard is a crisp passer and quality ball handler. He was at his peak shooting the rock off the catch moving without the ball to get open before bombing away. DeVries had 13 points.
SG Chris Akelaitis (Hononegah – 2020)
This 6’2” junior shooting guard was another sniper to continue to monitor. He drained a pair of triples along with having a nice baseline take on his way to 10 points.
SG Jarrett Strate-Lutzow (Hononegah – 2021)
Bit of a quiet game for the sophomore two guard. Had a quick finish in the paint and got on the glass for a put back. Decent rebounder for a two guard. He had 4 points. Has some upside.
