BREAKING DOWN THE RACE
Three teams — SJNMA, Brookfield Academy, and Lake County Lutheran are all ranked in Division 3. Including University School, the Midwest Classic Conference has four viable championship contenders.
The two unbeaten squads — SJNMA and Brookfield Academy will meet twice in February in two games that will have the biggest influence on the conference race.
SURPRISE TEAM
This was an 11-13 ball club last season. Now at 9-2 overall, Lake County Lutheran’s lone loss to an in-state foe came against Brookfield Academy by just three points. Senior guard Bryce Haertle is having a huge season, having substantially increased his offensive output from 2017-18.
OUR PICK
As the season wears on, Brookfield Academy might be best suited to win a loaded conference like this. The Blue Knights have a variety of scoring options and a squad that plays very well off each other. Junior guard Aidan Clarey leads the way at 19.2 ppg, but Max Kunnert (13.7 ppg), Marco Humphrey (12.6 ppg), Logan Landers (12.0 ppg), Alex Leach (9.3 ppg), and Jack Falzon (5.1 ppg) all bring something different to the table.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Senior wing James Kelley is averaging 22.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. Kelley has hit the 30-point mark twice this season and currently has SJNMA undefeated with an overall record of 9-0.
Other Candidates: Kionte Ewing (Hope Christian), Bryce Haertle (Lake County Lutheran), Aidan Clarey (Brookfield Academy), Brandin Podziemski (SJNMA)
