BREAKING DOWN THE RACE
As expected, Brookfield Central and Sussex Hamilton look like they’ll separate from the rest of the pack. The two squads played a memorable game in December, with the Chargers taking a 69-61 victory at home.
Things have been a little more crowded at the top than expected, however. Both Germantown and Brookfield East have hung around in this race and could complicate things for the two favorites down the stretch.
SURPRISE TEAM
Germantown was 6-17 last season and is now just a game back of first place in the Greater Metro Conference. Senior forward Luke Taylor (18.3 ppg) has been as good as expected, but the Warhawks have also found major contributions from Justin Thompson (16.2 ppg) and Michael Doran (12.5 ppg), leading this early season charge.
OUR PICK
In their first game of the season, Sussex Hamilton beat Brookfield Central, who were already three games into the season. The Lancers might be deeper and the more senior-laden squad, but they don’t have a matchup for Patrick Baldwin Jr. — not that anybody does. Who advances to state from this sectional may be a different story, but the next meeting between these two teams in January should be an epic one that could decide the Greater Metro champ.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Truman State commit Gage Malensek is having the best season of anyone in the conference. Malensek is averaging 20.4 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game for Central, who remains a legitimate threat to win the Division 1 state title.
Other Candidates: Patrick Baldwin Jr. (Sussex Hamilton), Riley Le Tourneau (Brookfield East), Joey Platz (Marquette), Luke Taylor (Germantown), Cole Nau (Brookfield Central)
