The nine-game event – which featured great hospitality and media-friendliness – featured several squads knocking on the door of San Diego’s top 10, including Montgomery, Carlsbad, Sweetwater and Mater Dei Catholic.
We’ll break down the event in a series of reports, beginning a look at the senior standouts:
MLK Day Showcase – Senior standouts
Carter Plousha, 6-5 W, Carlsbad
Plousha came off the bench and immediately set the tone for the Lancers in their rout of Sweetwater. He attacked the rim off the dribble, rebounded in traffic and played solid denial defense against Red Devils standout CJ McMillan. When engaged, he’s one of the better unsigned wing prospects in SoCal.
CJ Jackson, 6-7 C, Sweetwater
Jackson is a monster rebounder who corrals rebounds with intimidating force. His athleticism and length allow him to pursue rebounds well outside of the paint, and he outlets the ball to guards to initiate the fast break. Jackson has limitations as a scorer, but hit a 15-footer that looked pretty smooth. If he smooths out the edges at the junior college level, Jackson will be a commodity for D1 programs.
Roman Wright, 5-11 PG, Rancho Bernardo
Wright did everything in his power to keep the Broncos in the game against Mater Dei Catholic, scoring off the bounce, playing tough on defense and hitting four threes. He remains one of the better available unsigned point guard options in SoCal.
Kyle Paranada, 5-6 G, Montgomery
It wasn’t the most efficient 23-point effort, but Paranada hit big shots and free throws down the stretch to get Montgomery the win. On top of that, he set the school’s all-time scoring record, with 1,660 career points. When he’s on, Paranada puts on incredible shooting displays from deep and can score with a crafty layup package. His shot selection must get better to have a shot of impacting the game at the next level.
