Milestone Moun’Tae: Centennial Senior Reaches 1K
Only a few players accumulate over one thousand points in a high school basketball career.
Oklahoma Centennial’s Moun’Tae Edmundson Jr. etched his name onto that list when he recorded his one thousandth point last Friday night in a loss to Santa Fe South.
“I’m very happy and blessed to achieve such a big milestone like this in my high school career,” Edmundson says.
“As a freshman, I always thought about ‘what if I hit 1k’ but I never really believed I would get it,” Edmundson says. “It was just one of those ‘what if’ thoughts I had back then.”
Now a senior, Edmundson has started for the Bison since his sophomore year. He has plenty of thanks to give for the journey.
“I’m thankful for my mom and pops. They have worked countless hours to keep me fed and with clothes on my back,” Edmundson says. “Also, making sure I stayed on the right track and not going into the streets.”
Edmundson also says his parents taught him the importance of respect, school, and being a student-athlete first.
Centennial High School, who opened its doors in 2007 as a member of Oklahoma City Public Schools, faces the possibility of closing down at the conclusion of the 2018-2019 season, Edmundson says. Despite winning back-to-back 3A titles in 2011 and 2012, Edmundson is the only player in school history to reach one thousand points and may be the last.
“It really does feel special to know that I will go down in the history books for Centennial,” Edmundson says.
The Bison are among schools in the race for the 3A State Championship, and despite the achievement of reaching one thousand points, Edmundson says he has not lost any focus.
“I want to finish the regular season with a winning record,” Edmundson says. “and ultimately go out on top with winning a State Championship.”
“I want to make sure everyone on the team is focused and has the same mindset as well as goals we’re trying to accomplish for the season,” Edmundson says.
