8) Thibodaux (20-2)
For those that are wondering why a 20-2 5A school isn’t higher on this list, the answer is simple; strength of schedule. They have played a solid 5A schedule, but they haven’t played nearly as tough a schedule as anyone else in the top 15. They have only had two matchups against other Top 25 teams, and they are 1-1 in those games. Still, there has to be credit due for winning the games that you are supposed to win, and Thibodaux has done that all season.
9) Walker (19-9)
Despite having the most amount of losses of any team ranked in the Prep Hoops Louisiana Top 25, I think Walker is very deserving of a top 10 ranking. They have played one of the toughest schedules in the state, as of their 28 games so far this season, 13 of them have been against teams ranked in the top 25 in the state. That’s also not including 2 losses against out of state competition. And the tough schedule hasn’t ended yet, as they still have games remaining against Scotlandville and Live Oak, who are both in the Top 25. The good news is that they have the top end talent to compete with anyone, with top 2 2020 PG Jalen Cook and top 10 2021 G/F Brian Thomas.
10) Ouachita Parish (21-5)
For my money, Ouachita Parish is one of the most underrated programs in the state. For each of the past 4 season, they have reached at least the quarter finals of the 5A playoffs, and they are on pace to do the same again this season, as they are currently at number 2 in LHSAA power ratings for 5A. They even made Marsh Madness a season ago, yet they aren’t discussed with the level of respect that their resume over the past 5 years should warrant them.
11) Holy Cross (21-5)
I will be honest, when I was first putting together this top 25 ranking, I had Holy Cross in the top 10. And if you make the argument that they should be a top 10 team in the state, I wouldn’t necessarily disagree. What ultimately kept them from being put in the top 10 was the loss to Warren Easton, who is no doubt a respectable program but none of the other top 10 teams have a loss on their resume to an average 4A team. Now, don’t get me wrong, Holy Cross is a heck of a team this season that is every bit a contender in Division 1. And if they are able to get a win against St. Augustine, I can easily see them moving into the top 10 in the next update.
12) Landry-Walker (13-7)
I will say this about Landry-Walker that can’t be said about many teams with 7 losses; they have been competitive in just about every game that they have lost this season. They only have 2 games that they lost by more than 10, and as long as the game is within 10 points, you have given yourself a chance to get a win. I will also say this about the Chargin’ Bucs; even though they have “struggled” a bit in the regular season, this is 100% a team that is built for a deep playoff push. They have the guards, wings, and bigs that is required, and they will be able to defend at a high level. Both of those are the key to playoff success at any level.
13) Bonnabel (17-5)
Now, don’t get me wrong, district 8-5A isn’t as good as it was a couple years ago, when they got 3 teams in the final 4 of the toughest class in the state. But, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that district got 2 teams in the final 4 this season. When I was talking about Landry-Walker, before, I said that they are a team that is built for a deep playoff run, and I think much of the same about Bonnabel. They might not have the wings, but they have two senior studs at guard, in Rodney Munson and Donte Mitchell, and a few guards underneath them that have the chance to be real difference makers. And while their big, Will Allen, might be young, he is one of the best of the 2021 class, and will be able to defend the rim and rebound at a high level for them.
14) Jesuit (22-4)
After a couple years of rebuilding, it definitely looks like the historic “Catholic League” out of New Orleans is back. With Jesuit at 14, this marks the 3rd Catholic League team in the top 15, after having none in the rankings a season ago. Not only that, but of Jesuit’s 4 losses so far this season, 3 of them have come against the other Catholic League members that are ranked ahead of them. If they are able to get both wins in the first week February over Holy Cross and St. Augustine, look for the Bluejays to move up in the next Top 25 Power Rankings update.
