1) U-High (13-9)
I will be honest, this is the most down that Division II has been since the LHSAA decided to split public and private school playoffs. But even so, U-High has the best resume of any school in their division. They have some tough wins, and they have been competitive in nearly every loss so far this season. They also have the talent to compete for a state title, with a trio of juniors in Milan Mejia, Shawn Jones, and DJ Morton that are capable of filling up the box score any night.
2) De La Salle (14-7)
De La Salle is a school that despite having 7 losses, I wouldn’t necessarily say that they have any losses that they shouldn’t have. The only loss that they really shouldn’t have was against Edna Karr, but that is a team that they have now beaten twice since losing to them in the first matchup. De La Salle also has the talent to compete with the best of Div. II, as they have really had every year since Coach Paul Kelly took over for the Cavaliers.
3) Loyola Prep (16-4)
Loyola Prep has the most impressive record of anyone in Division II, at 16-4, but they also have the easiest schedule that anyone in the Division has played. However, they might also have the best player in the Division on their team, in Devan Melancon. He is capable of going for 30 any night, even when he is being face guarded. He has one of the purest strokes of anyone in the state.
4) St. Thomas More (13-7)
Despite the power rankings coming out today and it placing the Cougars at the number 10 spot in Div. II, I refuse to believe that they should be ranked that low. You can call me a homer, but I don’t think that the culture and program at STM will stop them from reaching the final four once again this season. This is the youngest that they have been in a while, but there is still young talent that is growing together as the year goes on.
5) St. Louis (12-8)
Depending on what you feel about St. Thomas More, there is either a it of a drop off in teams right before or right after them. There are a handful of teams that are in competition for this 5th spot, and if any of David Thibodaux, Lee Magnet, ED White, St. Michael, or Lusher make the final 4 in the playoffs, I wouldn’t be shocked at all. With no outright, clear cut leader come playoff time, the playoffs in Division II are going to be decided more by matchups than perhaps any other state championship.
