Top 5
1) Landry Walker (12-5
And now there is a new king on top when it comes to the state championship race in 5A. After coming up just short a season ago, I was expecting a bit more of a step back for Landry-Walker, but they keep right on plugging away. Senior guard Shadon Green has stepped up big this year and has put up some bigs games when they needed it the most.
2) Thibodaux (18-2)
Thibodaux is currently the top ranked team according to power points in 5A, and they come in as the second ranked team in 5A according to Prep Hoops Louisiana. The reason they aren’t at the top is because despite having a bunch of really solid wins, they don’t really have a statement win on their resume. Now that isn’t to say their aren’t talented, or that their aren’t a serious title contender in 5A. And if they were to finish the regular season with just 2 losses on the year, I will have to do some serious re-evaluation.
3) Bonnabel (15-4)
Another year for Bonnabel, and another successful basketball season thus far. The Bruins are super well rounded this season, and they are capable of just throwing guard after guard at you. They also have multiple guards who are capable of going for 25+ on any given night. Add in the intense defense that the Bruins culture has made necessary, and you find a team that is capable of beating anyone in 5A any night.
4) Walker (17-8)
For the first time this year, Walker isn’t the top ranked team in 5A. They have had a bit of a rough go of things as of late, and they have by far the most losses of anyone ranked in the top 5 in 5A. They have also had by far the toughest schedule in 5A, and only one of their losses has come against a team that I wouldn’t consider the favorite to win a state title this season. Their top 2 players are good enough to compete with the top 2 players of any team in the state, but to reach their peak, they are going to need some guys around Jalen Cook and Brian Thomas to step up.
5) Dutchtown (14-4)
And for the first time in Prep Hoops history, Dutchtown is ranked in the top 5 in 5A. In my eyes, the race for the 5A state title is wide open, and Dutchtown has as good a shot as anyone. They have a future D1 player in Nick Caldwell, and more than enough surrounding talent around him to get the job done. My biggest issue with Dutchtown is the same that I have for Thibodaux. They don’t really have a statement win this season, and that is keeping them from moving up in 5A so far.
Watchlist:
Ponchatoula (16-4)
Live Oak (15-6)
Ouachita Parish (19-5)
