Class 5A – #2 Ouachita, #8 Natchitoches Central, #16 Southwood, #22 Alexandria, #23 Pineville, #27 West Monroe, #28 Airline
Class 5A is probably one of the most wide open, and also confusing, rankings of this basketball season. In reference to north Louisiana, the only thing that is clear cut is that Ouachita is the #2 team. They would possibly be the top team if they were not 1-4 against Rayville and Wossman. They have quality wins against Tioga and Carencro as well. Both Alexandria and Pineville are a combined 1-7 in district with the second round of district play coming. It would not surprise me if one of them drops completely out of the top 32 if they go winless in district. Natchitoches Central and Southwood are teams who have quality wins and head-scrathing losses. West Monroe rounds out the five team contingent from 2-5A while Airline is the lone other 1-5A team. Outside of Ouachita, all of these teams need to step it up to secure firm positions within the top 32.
Class 4A – #1 Bossier, #4 Woodlawn-Shreveport, #9 Huntington, #10 Franklin Parish, #11 Tioga, #25 Neville, #29 BTW-Shreveport
Class 4A also has seven north Louisiana schools that sit within the top 32. There is no surprise that Bossier and Woodlawn-Shreveport are the two top north Louisiana teams. They have shown their metal against all levels of competition regardless of class and have come out the victor more times than not. District 1-4A also has the #9 and #29 teams in Huntington and BTW-Shreveport, respectively. All four teams have top notch guard play which gives them a chance to win any contest. 2-4A has two representatives in Franklin Parish (#11) and Neville (#25). Franklin Parish is a fast, gritty team who put pressure on a team full court while Neville relies more on defense and offensive rebounding. Rounding out the north Louisiana teams is Tioga. The lone 3-4A school has sat in the top 10 most of the season and seems to be ready for the playoffs.
Class 3A – #1 Peabody, #2 Wossman, #8 Carroll, #13 Madison, #15 Green Oaks, #18 Sterlington, #19 Bolton, #21 Jena, #23 Richwood
A total of nine schools from north Louisiana grace the top 32 rankings in class 3A. The top two have been a the top two teams for a large portion of the season. Peabody and Wossman have each played tough schedules which have secured them their lofty positions. Wossman has company from 2-3A with four other teams in the top 32. Carroll and Richwood are two young but up-and-coming squads are #8 and #23. Madison sits at #13 and Sterlington is holding at #18. Sterlington hopes not to repeat last season by missing the playoff after being ranked in the top 10 early in the season. Class 3-3A will come down to their two representatives, Bolton and Jena, fighting for the district title. Rounding out the north Louisiana group is Green Oaks under new coach Corey Deans. Their #15 ranking is the highest non-select ranking of any 1-3A school.
There are plenty of games left in these higher classifications so things can change. We will also see if the out-of-state games played by some schools make a difference. All of that will be chronicled in the next review of the rankings next time.
