Some simply have a late spurt in growth and development, while others put in the time and work to become better. John Michael Wright’s story is one of the most intriguing that I’ve seen in all my years of scouting and the scary part is, he is only going to get better. The first time I was introduced to John Michael he was a seldom used player who was still finding his way, he didn’t get much time on the court and was playing behind a few guards that were more highly touted and further along.
His sophomore season at Fayetteville Academy is where you saw the growth and work that he put in as his game fully began to come together. In that season he earned Conference Player Of The Year honors as well as being named to the NCISAA 2A All-State squad, they would go on to win their Conference Championship and he would follow the season with a Camp MVP performance at North Carolinas top invitational ‘‘ Fab 40 Camp”. His junior season would be cut short after he was severely injured but he would take full advantage of playing against some of the nation’s best players during the spring and summer on the EYBL circuit.
Wright being named Fab 40 Camp MVPNow comes the fun part, his senior season has been an absolute showcase of what he is and what he has the chance to be. His team is at 11-2 and have wins over schools such as: Village Christian, Trinity Christian, Freedom Christian and Word of God Christian. One of the main reasons for their success is the play of John Michael Wright, he has been absolutely dominant, just about every night he’s playing 30+ mins and stuffing the stat sheet. He put up 29 Points, 10 Assist and 7 Rebounds vs Trinity and 29 Points, 8 Rebounds and 7 Assist vs Village Christian in their rematch. Hisplay has placed his name in the running as the best Player in Fayetteville, NC and in the debate for top PG in NC.
Schools have definitely taken notice such as: Boston College, Arkansas State, Longwood, Elon and High Point who have either offered or shown interest. However with the way he has been playing and the high character youngster he is, we are surprised that more schools haven’t been on him harder.
