When you have two mid to high-major Division I prospects on your roster and you’re playing at 1A ranks in Iowa, domination is expected. That’s exactly what the Thunder have been doing this season. Mali-born seniors Issa Samake and Harouna Sissoko have both been tremendous this season, but it’s been veteran Thunder senior Arturo Montes who’s been just as effective as the high-flying D1 duo. GVC has now won 10 straight games since narrowly losing to 4A power Iowa City West. They are overwhelming favorites to win a Class 1A state title.
Des Moines North
Things have never been bad this season for the Polar Bears, but the 2018 part of their season was a little less successful than anticipated. They went 3-2 to start the season, but have run off seven straight wins since. South Alabama recruit Tyreke Locure has been ridiculously good, as everyone expected him to be. Gatdoar Bijiek has emerged as one of the CIML’s best scorers. The Polar Bears are back on track to compete for a 4A state title.
Carroll
It’s now eight straight wins and counting for the Tigers, which have only lost one game this season so far. They bring a 10-1 record into Friday night’s game against Bondurant-Farrar, and will be favored in that game and every other game moving forward this season. Established junior shooting guard Colby Vincent has been outstanding, he’s averaging 13.3 points per game. But several other guys have stepped up this season; Jang Jioklow leads the team with 13.6 and 5.4 rebounds points per game, junior Karter Lein is is shooting 61 percent from deep and averaging 12.3 points, Lol Buomkuoth is scoring it well at 11.1 points per game.

Anytime you have a player like Bowen Born on the team, you’re going to have a chance to win a lot of games. And although the Warriors got of to a less-than-stellar 5-3 start, they’ve run off five straight wins since then. And the win streak hasn’t come against all bad teams, either; it started with a monster win over Oskaloosa, 58-46 back on Dec. 18. It’s tough sledding this Friday against another hot team, Indianola. That’ll be one of the best games of the week.
Treynor
Death, taxes, and Treynor being one of the state’s best 2A basketball teams. For as long as we’ve been writing about high school hoops, Treynor has been an elite program in the state. It doesn’t matter who graduated the year before, there’s always personnel in place to fill whatever void might exist. This season, it’s Jack Tiarks, Jon Schwarte, Jack Stogdill and Jerry Jorgenson that are leading the charge for the 13-0 Cardinals, PHIA’s 3rd-ranked 2A squad.
