Southeast Polk
The season started poorly, but things have turned around considerably of late. After an 0-5 start the Rams have all of a sudden turned red-hot, winners of four out of five. And it’s not like they’re beating up on bad teams, their last two wins have come against then-6-2 Marshalltown and Class 4A’s 9th-ranked team, Ames. A new coach and some new players were added to the mix this season. It seems things just took a little while to heat up, and now the Rams are cooking.
Pella
At least once a season Pella makes one of these “hot teams” lists, and it doesn’t matter who graduates from the Little Dutch, they’re always going to be among 3A’s best teams. Sophomore Grant Nelson buried a dramatic game-winning buzzer-beater last night against ADM to give the Dutch their sixth-straight win. Pella has been led by junior Logan Shetterly’s 17.2 points per game, and have proven they are once again a threat to make a deep run in the 3A field.
Camanche
Guys like Caleb Delzell and Cameron Soenksen have the Indians flying high, and they’re undoubtedly eyeing a Class 2A state title this season. Camanche has started its season 11-0, and are winning those games by an average of 22 points. The Indians will be favored in the rest of their regular season games moving forward, and have a really decent shot of finishing it undefeated.
New London
Mason Porter and Keontae Luckett have been terrorizing opponents for more than three years now, and the senior duo has been red-hot so far this season for the Tigers. New London is now 11-0 to start the season, and has been slotted at No. 2 in the latest Prep Hoops Iowa team rankings. Porter is averaging team-bests 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Luckett is averaging 12.7 points and a team-best seven assists. They’ll try and make it a 12-0 start this Friday night at 6-6 Danville.
