For Darian James a senior point guard for the Rock Creek Mustangs, that reality has become evident.
“I’m just trying to set myself up with the right connections to get me in contact with the colleges,” said James.
James has a pretty unique skill set that translates well at the next level. In spite of his height, the 5-foot-10 senior has the tools to compete in the one-role.
“My best skill is my vision and my passing,” James said. “I love getting my teammates involved.”
We were able to watch James for the first time at the Kingston New Year’s Classic and were instantly impressed by his floor vision, athleticism, and ball-handling.
His stellar play, in fact, led the Mustangs to a win over the first-ranked Dale Pirates and ultimately, into the top spot in our latest 2A rankings.
In the New Year’s Classic Championship, James led the Mustangs once again into contention with the No. 1 team in the state, this time in 3A against the one-loss Kingston Redskins. The Redskins eventually pulled out a 53-47 win, but not before the Mustangs made a statement.
With his shiftiness and lateral strength, James was predominately impactful in getting separation to make room for plays to be made. Once he got that separation, he could get into the lane and finish at the rim with ease or find a slashing wing for an easy two.
Despite his impressive play, James maintains that he has not received any offers, but hopes for that to change in the near future.
“People should know that I’m a player who will give his all on the floor,” James said. “And do what his team needs to do to win the game.”
James’ impressive play earned him a spot in the New Year’s Classic All-Tournament team. His name will certainly be a name worth remembering.
