Goodpasture (22-1, 12-0) managed to leave Clarksville, Tennessee victorious in the face of a hard-charging Clarksville Academy (13-8, 9-2) flurry late. Final score: 51-48 GCHS.
Closing Time
Goodpasture senior Chandler Woosley certainly helped the visiting Cougars hold off the late charge. He scored a couple buckets in the tense times to finish with 14 points.
Star performer Hunter Scurlock (PrepHoopsTN #147) missed FT with 6.6 seconds left. The senior buried his second attempt, giving him 15 points for the game. Goodpasture timeout.
With the purpose of slowing down Clarksville Academy, Goodpasture Head Coach Adam Sonn extended his Cougar defense the full length of the court.
Winding through the Goodpasture trap, Clarksville Academy did get that final attempt to tie the game at 51-51. It clanged long.
Game over.
The True Story
Clarksville Academy owned an uneasy relationship with the three-point shot. During the first half CA appeared unwilling to take the outside shot. In the third and early fourth quarters, CA embraced the challenge and buried several triples, but in the final two minutes the touch vanished.
The one exception was noteworth as Nolan Johnson ducked under an ambitious shotblocker. Johnson kept a semblance of balance though he was whacked across the head, and managed to kiss the net.
Hunter Scurlock Effect
Hunter created so many problems for the Clarksville Academy perimeter defense. Between P.J. Smith and Hunter the Cougars routinely carved their gaps into the defense. When Scurlock failed to get that entire step advantage he simply kicked to a wide open P.J. Smith.
Scurlock’s creativity and length with the basketball truly made a difference throughout the contest.
Scurlock’s arms made an impact defensively too. Standing 6-foot-5, Hunter played as one of the head two in the visiting Cougars’ 2-3 zone.
GP defense is pretty casual around the arc, but they squeeze like a snapping turtle when you get into their pond (paint). The Cougars save their energy but not overextending.
Lob to Loos
Concluding the second quarter Moody’s missed free throw bounded twice off the rim. Daniel Loos out-jumped two Goodpasture rebounders to beat the buzzer with class.
Loos (PrepHoopsTN #53 in 2020beat the halftime buzzer with offensive rebound. That theme continued into the second half.
Loos' activity has been high all night. But just now the designed plays are getting him touches. Touches it appears @CABoysBB needs to take down @GCS_Bball.
35-24 Goodpasture, 35-25. Jeremiah Smith splits them. Loos off reb again!!

Promising Young P.J.
Goodpasture sophomore PJ Smith senses desperation in his teammates and hunts down the basketball in tense moments. Smith (PrepHoopsTN #74 in 2021)is very comfortable in ordinarily stressful situations. Tough to rip.
As a shooter, Smith is not where he needs to be yet. The lift and release are fine, perhaps even better than average, but his touch is not excellent and he should be as good a shooter as he already is a floor general and ball-handler.
