Trey Alexander, Phillip Smitherman, Jack Spanier, and Will McDonald combined for 59 of the Chargers 65 points.
Alexander was the primary ball-handler for Heritage Hall and Carl Albert had no answer for him. He enforced his will on the Titans in the fourth quarter, created the intimidation factor, then subsequently everything came naturally. His ability to create his own shot, control the pace of the game, and create open shots for his teammates is what makes him such a threat. His defensive alertness as a 15-year-old sophomore may be the most underrated aspect of his game.
Smitherman also did a great job collecting rebounds on the offensive end and capitalizing on it with second-chance points. 7 of his 13 points came off offensive rebounds that he pulled down. Smitherman finished with 13 rebounds, 7 of which were on offense.
McDonald, along with Smitherman is Heritage Hall’s energy guy. He has the potential (as we’ve seen earlier this season) to be just like Alexander, where he can run the point and create his own shot but on Friday night, he did what the team needed him to do. His ability to get to the rim is very special. He’s not overly strong, quick or athletic but he has just enough of all three of those attributes to make a significant impact.
Jack Spanier is the Chargers ole reliable. He shares the point guard role with Alexander. Actually, Spanier, Alexander, and McDonald are the three primary ball-handlers for the Chargers which gives them an advantage that most high school teams don’t have.
Spanier finished the game with 10 points where he had 5 assists to go with 10 points on 2-of-3 shooting from three-point range.
The Chargers have a nice arsenal of talent and clearly, have all the team chemistry in the world. It’s hard to beat that and with this win over the Titans, Heritage hall remains undefeated on the season. The No. 1 team in 4A improved to (14-0), while the No. 5 team in 5A falls to (8-5).
