This bunch however is a bit different as there are a few diamonds in the rough and this seems like a group ready to make a splash. Here is who has stood out on varsity from the freshman class so far.
Micah Leslie – Valor Christian – 2022
Micah is a two-sport athlete and although Valor Christian’s basketball team isn’t having the same type of success as the football team Micah is along for the ride. He is a big man with great size for his age and is learning how to put it all together. He has appeared in all games this season and has made his impact known down low. He is up to 4.4 rebounds a game as a consistent player you can put into the game and know exactly what to expect. Micah has a great understanding of the game and knows what he is good at and does not play outside of himself which is not what you typically see from a young guy. He is a player that I feel will eventually be one of the go-to scorers and as he gets more comfortable in the flow of the offense will be a dominant big man in the state come senior year. This off season will prove critical for him and I am sure he will work on plenty of things.
Sam Howery – St. Mary – 2022
Sam is having an incredible first impression in the state as he is putting up some of the best numbers from any freshman in any classification around the state. He is off to 15.7 points, 5.0 assists and 3.3 steals a game which he leads his team in each category. On top of that he is doing this while being the player that each team game plans for and tries to stop and still each game he steps up and leads his team. He has scored double digits in every single game this year and opens things up because he can shoot out of every single situation and also is able to put himself in good spots to score. He gets others involved and is well advanced for a player so young. I expect him to jump onto the scene by junior year and be a standout player in the state. He just has to remain consistent and show what he has in the summer.
Jackson Keil – Sterling — 2022
Jackson is a big-time player and his impact is different than a lot of our underclassmen because not only is he involved in the offense as a major contributor but he is on one of the state’s top teams. Sterling is undefeated on the season and he has been a part of why as they are a deep team. He is up to 8.5 points and 2.9 rebounds and he not only fits in but stands out. He is comfortable in the offense, is able to create on his own and is trusted by his coach and teammates. He has progressed as the season has gone along and is on a team that is winning so he is able to take it all in while getting better and will be a player to watch over the years.
Langston Reynolds – Denver East – 2022
Langston is as versatile as any freshman in the state as he has the ability to guard the smaller guys but strength to guard big man even as a freshman. He takes pride in showing that he can defend at a high level and while he was supposed to be a player that was on jv and swinging a bit of varsity he has been placed in a position where he is able to contribute now. He is a big guard that gets others involved and knows how to play alongside one of the best players in the state in Kwane Marble. He is trusted amongst teammates as a ball handler as well as a player that can score when needed. He pushes the tempo and gets to the charity stripe. He is a player that Rudy Carey places in the game at times and the team does not miss a beat as he had a few good games where he was inserted into the lineup for energy in Las Vegas and has carried that momentum in state as a spark plug as well.
BrockLan Wisne – Horizon — 2022
Horizon is not a team that is going to try and pick up the pace and wow you with high scoring games. They are going to slow it down and get in their sets and wear you down slowly and one of the players they do that with is Wisne. Wisne is one of the most important pieces of the team already in only his freshman season. He is the big man that everything goes through and is capable of changing the outcome of the game with sheer size and skill. He is relentless on the boards and does all of the little things well like boxing out, keeping plays alive and setting hard screens. He gets the most out of his already 6’5 frame and leads the team in rebounds at 5.2 a game. Brock has work to do on the offensive end and that will come with time as you can see with his 6.6 points a game but he gets it on the block, is able to bang with the big guys and does not give up on plays. Check him out.
