Usually freshman aren’t asked to carry a heavy load, but these young players have done just that so far. Take a look as we breakdown some 2022 freshman stand-outs on the hardwood to begin the new year.
Area Freshman To Watch:
Sean Jones (Gahanna-Lincoln): Playing in the tough OCC-Ohio, Sean Jones has been a go-to floor general for Gahanna. The stud freshman is averaging close to 16 PPG and has scored well from all three levels. A solid defender already, Jones is ahead of his time. Always making the right play it seems, Jones is FAST. If the young Lion gets out on the break, you might as well forget about it. Look for Sean to be one of the top players in the area, for the next four years.
DJ Moore (Worthington Christian): Averaging almost 20 points a game, DJ Moore has been excellent for Worthington Christian. With a 30 point game on his resume already, the young guard has the skills to be a high level scorer. With the ability to score in multiple ways already, teams are going to have a lot of trouble in the future guarding the freshman star.
Troy Scowden (Buckeye Valley): Standing at 6’6 as a freshman, you can only imagine the height advantage the lengthy Scowden has on a night to night basis. Scoring inside at will, don’t underestimate his shooting, as he obtains a nice shot. Averaging about 13 points a game, the stud forward is also a force on defense. If you put up a shot inside, expect it to be often sent back by the 6’6 frame. Troy Scowden is definitely a player to watch going forward as he gets older and stronger.
Jared Frey (St. Charles): Bursting onto the scene in his first varsity action, Jared filled it up with 25 points in a win over Eastmoor. Deadly from deep, Jared also does an excellent job putting the ball on the floor. The 6’4 wing is a solid rebounder to go with his offensive skills. The stud St. Charles freshman is a multi-dimensional player to keep an eye on through his prep career.
Noah Lawrence (Westerville North): On a team with some top heavy upperclassmen scorers, the freshman guard hasn’t had to do a whole lot. Opening the season against Olentangy, the newcomer Lawrence put up his season high of 17 so far. Playing bigger then his size at 5’10, Lastly, Noah should be a pretty good guard in years to come with more experience. But for now, we will see flashes of his game with every opportunity he receives.
It should be very interesting to see how these players can finish their freshman campaigns, and what improvements are made.
