REDONDO BEACH, CA—There were a number of fine performances throughout day two of the Take Flight Challenge—but none were more impressive than 2020 Ziaire Williams terrific all-around game (33-points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocks). Sophomore Kenneth Simpson Jr. (Chaminade), junior Devin Tillis (Windward), and Oregon State-bound Jarod Lucas (Los Altos) put together fine performances as well.
Ziaire Williams (Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame)
2020, WF, 6-foot-8, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: In his match up against nationally rated classmate Julian Strawther, Williams came out firing to a tune of 25-points in the 1st half. Along with the points—which came in a number of ways inside-and-out. He a number of pull-ups from deep, dropped a few nifty dimes, and handled the ball with aplomb. It’s safe to say he is a Top 10 prospect in the country.
CJ Jones (Loyola)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The steady Jones scored inside and out in this efficient outing. He popped in some deep jump shots and utilized his thick frame to convert in the paint. He has a high IQ for the game, moves well without the ball, and there is no wasted motion.
John Clausell (Leuzinger)
2019, PG, 5-foot-4, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: Clausell was in attack mode from the go and Leuzinger needed it because Amound Anderson started off slow. Clausell penetrated at will, was a terror in transition, and when it was all said and done dropped in 24-points.
Brandon Whitney (Alemany)
2020, PG, 6-foot, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Whitney is coming off a fine performance at The Classic at Damien and it continued at this event. He ran the half court set with skill and savvy as he hit pull-up jump shots, tossed in some tough lay-ups in traffic, and snapped a few pin-point passes to open shooters. The size, quickness, and speed are all evident to play somewhere at the college level.
Johnny Juzang (Harvard-Westlake)
2020, SG, 6-foot-5, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Juzang, in only his 2nd game back from a significant foot injury, looked like he was getting back to his old self—a scoring machine. He knocked in some deep jump shots and attacked well off the bounce. In addition, he did a nice job of setting up teammates with timely passing.
Chase Bowsher (Redondo Union)
2019, PF, 6-foot-6, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Bowsher is a gawky 4-man who runs well, has a high motor, and has a knack for being around the ball. His bouncy nature, soft hands, and intincts allows him to rebound in and out of his area and he can even knock in the 3-point shot. He needs to build up his upper body strength, but he can play somewhere in college.
