NORWALK, CA—Harvey Kitani, the architect of the Rolling Hills Prep State Preview, put together a nice collection of teams with intriguing stroylines. However, no one expected Camarillo to pull off one of the biggest surprises of this hoops season—it’s upset of Mater Dei. Adding to the excitement was a number of impressive performances by super junior Mady Sissoko (Wasatch Academy) and up-and-coming Sedrick Altman (Colony).
Brenton Knapper (Colony)
2021, PG, 5-foot-11, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the fastest rising sophomores in So-Cal is Knapper. The ultra-cool point guard prospect plays at a great pace, has a tight pull-up game, and is an explosive athlete. Has some Darius Garland (Vanderbilt) in his game.
Peyton Watson (Long Beach Poly)
2021, WF, 6-foot-4, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Watson is that prospect that will resemble the phrase “it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.” Broad shoulders, high hips, and long arms describe the physical tools and his pull-up game is evolving as well. He and fellow classmate 6-foot-7 Solomon Jones should turn out to be a quality inside-out combination going forward.
Nick Davidson (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-8, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Davidson continues to take his game to new levels. The pick-and-pop 4-man has a smooth shooting stroke, tight foot work on the block, and possesses a nice soft touch in and out of the paint.
Christian Moore (Brentwood)
2022, WF, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Moore is a blossoming skilled wing-type who affects the game in a number of ways. He can score with either hand going to the rim, has a nice shooting stroke out to the stripe, and can deliver the savvy pass to open teammates.
Michael Ofoegbu (Mayfair)
2019, WF/PF, 6-foot-7, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more intriguing prospects in So-Cal is the explosive Ofoegbu. He has a terrific frame with long arms and he is ultra-bouncy. His ball skills are on the come and he can knock in the 3-ball. Whether it’s a year in JUCO or prep school, he’ll be a Division 1 player someday.
