NORWALK, CA—Harvey Kitani, the architect of the Rolling Hills Prep State Preview, put together a nice collection of teams with intriguing stroylines. However, no one expected Camarillo to pull off one of the biggest surprises of this hoops season—it’s upset of Mater Dei. Adding to the excitement was a number of impressive performances by super junior Mady Sissoko (Wasatch Academy) and up-and-coming Sedrick Altman (Colony).
Jaxen Turner (Rancho Verde)
2019, SG, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: The term “green light” gets tossed around in Grassroots Hoops, but this label definitely applies to Turner, a Arizona signee in football. The gifted scorer has a smooth looking jump shot and an elite burst off the dribble. His efficiency fluctuates, but he is definitely a Division 1 guard as well.
Mady Sissoko (Wasatch Academy)
2020, C, 6-foot-9, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Sissoko is a relentless 5-man has some Amare Stoudemire to his game. He sprints in transition, protects the rim with aplomb and power, and is a tenacious rebounder in and out of his area.
Josh Christopher (Mayfair)
2020, SG, 6-foot-5, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: The physical tools are evident and the savvy has evolved as well, but Christopher needs to continue to hone his mindset in regards to winning. He plays hard and is always engaged and his skill set, strength, and bounce are high level. However, the “show” becomes too important at times instead of the task at hand. Overall though, he is a Top 15 national talent.
Johnny Juzang (Harvard-Westlake)
2020, SG, 6-foot-6, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Juzang is a scorer first and foremost and he is fearless in that regard. However, the biggest improvement of his game has been his passing prowess. He is not forcing the issue as much and as a result he has improved in the areas of decision making and creating for others.
Eriv “JR” Olofson (Brentwood)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Olofson, who is attending Penn University, is going to try to walk-on. Due to his impact on the game in a variety of ways, I would be shocked if he doesn’t make it. The do-it-all wing-type affects the game in rebounding, scoring off the dribble, and leadership.
