NORWALK, CA—Harvey Kitani, the architect of the Rolling Hills Prep State Preview, put together a nice collection of teams with intriguing stroylines. However, no one expected Camarillo to pull off one of the biggest surprises of this hoops season—it’s upset of Mater Dei. Adding to the excitement was a number of impressive performances by super junior Mady Sissoko (Wasatch Academy) and up-and-coming Sedrick Altman (Colony).
Wilhelm Breidenbach (Mater Dei)
2021, PF, 6-foot-8, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Monarchs are an extremely young team, but they have a sophomore “Big” who plays well-beyond his years. Breidenbach is a naturally skilled pick-and-pop 4-man who has a smooth stroke out to the stripe as well as a nasty streak on the block. His left-handed finishes and passing are a thing of beauty and he can set a mean screen.
Jamie Jaquez Jr. (Camarillo)
2019, WF, 6-foot-6, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Jaquez struggled a bit with efficiency (forced too many shots) in the 1st half, as Mater Dei threw a plethora of defenders at him—most notably 2021 Devin Askew. However, when the Scorpions needed to close out the comeback, he flourished. His two deep 3s put his team up against Mater Dei and he made a number of clutch plays at both ends down the stretch as well.
Devin Askew (Mater Dei)
2021, CG, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Askew plays well beyond his years with his ability to affect the game at both ends. He is a scoring guard who has a tight pull-up game, range on his jump shot, and he competes at a high level. He lacks elite burst and he wards off opponents with his left hand, but he does attack low and he’s very strong while attacking the defense.
Sedrick Altman (Colony)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the better unsigned seniors in Southern California and the state for that matter is Atlman. He fits that mold on where “it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish.” The ultra-explosive Altman is a terror in transition where he attacks the rim with a vengeance. In addition, he defends, rebounds, and competes at a very high-level. If you’re familar with the McDonald’s AA types, his game resembles Florida-bound Scottie Lewis.
Anton Mozga (Riverside/Notre Dame)
2019, SG, 6-foot-5, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Each and every game Notre Dame is so balanced it appears a different player each time out that excels. This particular game it was Mozga and of all his teammates (Holland, Sterling, and Bausley) Mozga may have the most upside. He can score at all three levels and as he continues to get stronger, his game will continue to evolve.
