SANTA ANA, CA.—The 24th Nike Extravaganza is yet again chock full of quality players and teams and right off the bat Oak Hill Academy demonstrated their prowess with a dismantling of Santa Margarita 94-67. Cole Anthony (Oak Hill Academy) was the headliner of the night, but it would be 6-foot-3 junior Cam Taylor (Oak Hill Academy) who would put on a show reminiscent of former Detroit Piston star Joe Dumars.
Vaughn Flowers (Rolling Hills Prep)
2020, SG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the better looking sleepers in So-Cal is Flowers. He is blessed with uncanny athleticism and as a result his upside is impressive. His ball skills are a bit raw as is his jump shot, but his 1st step is explosive and he has the ability to hang in the air and finish amongst the bigs.
Michael Pearson Jr. (Modesto Christian)
2020, PG, 5-foot-9, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: The ultra-quick Pearson was not intimidated against Oak Hill Academy. He showed off his tremendous burst off the dribble, his knack to score in traffic, as well as his ability to stop on a dime and nail the pull-up jump shot. Although he has a mindset to score he shows the ability to drop off impressive assists in the paint area.
Mason Hooks (Harvard-Westlake)
2020, C, 6-foot-9, 260 pounds
Joel’s Take: The massive Hooks is a load to deal with and he plays with fire as well. His upper body strength is site to see and he has good hands and improved footwork. He can score over either shoulder, carve out space in the paint, or show off a nice soft touch at the elbow.
Mwani Wilkinson (Bishop Gorman,NV)
2020, WF, 6-foot-6, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: Head Coach Grant Rice is blessed with a plethora of underclassmen and his biggest sleeper of the bunch is Wilkinson. The burly wing-type has very long arms and is as bouncy as it gets while attacking the rim. He needs to hone his perimeter handle and triple threat game, but he does have nice lift on his jump shot.
Isaiah Cottrell (Bishop Gorman,NV)
2020, PF, 6-foot-8, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: The ultra-bouncy Cottrell had a field day in the open court against Chino Hills. While 2022 Max Allen was giving the Huskies fits in the paint area, Cottrell was sprinting in transition where he had a number of nice finishes. The physicality aspect of the game needs to improve for Cottrell, but he does have some nice scoring skills developing.
